History: A vegan diet has been around since 500 BC.  Buddha had been known to promote a vegetarian diet to his followers. The First Modern Vegans: In November 1944, a meeting was held with 6 non-dairy vegetarians involved, including a man called Donald Watson. They discussed non-dairy vegetarian lifestyles and diets. It was in this group that they decided to call non-dairy vegetarians 'vegans' and this formed the first ever Vegan Society. The vegan society were against using animals for food, hunting, commodities, work and experimentation. Veganism Today: Today, there are many more vegans than there used to be. The idea of veganism has spread because people have been informed about the poor treatment of animals and animal cruelty. In the UK, the numbers of vegans has risen by 350% over the past 10 years as a result of Instagram. People have been influenced by pictures on Instagram. Benefits Of Being A Vegan On Your Health And The Enviroment.

Eating an entirely plant based diet can have many benefits on your health. 1) Less saturated fats: Dairy and meat products are composed of a lot of saturated fats. Too much fat in the diet leads to health problems such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Eating a vegan diet reduces these fats, therefore reducing the risk of these health problems. 2) Healthy skin: A vegan diet contains many nuts and vegetables which provide vitamins such as A and D, which contribute to having good skin. Many people who eat a vegan diet will notice that they get less blemishes. 3) Less risk of cancer: Plant based foods provide phytochemicals which help prevent cancer and heal the body from cancer. They also boost protective enzymes. The vegan diet also has benefits on the earth. Environment: Growing animals takes up much more resources than growing plants. By eating vegan, less animals will be produced as there won't be as much of a demand to produce them, benefitting the environ

How To Become A Vegan

Becoming a vegan is definitely a life changing choice to make. Not only do you have to cut out meat, but you also have to cut out ALL foods with any traces of animal products in them. For example, you cannot eat chocolate, cookies, crisps, jellies unless they state that they are vegan or have no animal products listed on the information label. Step 1: Educate yourself. In order to maintain getting all the macronutrients while being vegan, you must inform yourself of substitutes of meat, chicken etc. Cutting out meat and chicken will leave you with little to no protein intake. Therefore, research what foods can substitute chicken and meat. For example: tofu and quorn are two plant based proteins which can be used as a substitute for meat. Step 2: Try the food. Before becoming a vegan, you should try out the food. Maybe one or two days a week try and make vegan dinners with tofu instead of chicken. There are also many alternatives to snacks that you like. Even though vegans do not eat meat or any animal products, they still get the same amount of protein and minerals etc. as a person who eats an animal based diet. There are many plant based proteins available. For example: Tofu: Tofu is a plant based protein made from condensed soy milk which is pressed into blocks. It originated in Southeast Asian and West African countries. It is an excellent source of protein for vegans, instead of meat. It also can bulk out a vegan meal. A vegan is someone who chooses to eat a plant-based diet, which means that they do not eat any food which contains animal products. Animal products include meat, poultry, chicken, eggs, dairy products and some oils. Vegans do not eat anything with palm oil as it causes destruction to the natural habitats of orang-utans and other animals.
